Kevin Catching Against Latvia
Today was the start of the World Junior Frisbee Championships. After breakfast we headed over to the playing fields to watch as Canada won their first game against Latvia. It was our first time seeing Team Canada play together. We got to know some of the players, coaches, and the Canadian parents who, like us, traveling to Heilbronn to watch their children play for Team Canada.
The next game was scheduled for early evening. After lunch at the field, Karalee, Allen, Sharra, and David walked along the Neckar River and into the center of Heilbronn. The city was largely destroyed in World War II, so the commercial center is modern.
After some shopping we wandered among the streets until we stumbled upon the Saint Kilian's Church. Built in the 15th and 16th centuries it was finished in 1529. We wandered through the church admiring the tall nave with the carved altar by Hans Seyfer. This was Sharra's first time in a European church.
After our tour we wandered across the street to the market square where we stopped for an afternoon coffee. The town hall and market square make a beautiful spot in the middle of town. A modern tram runs right past the square, continuing to the train station, less than 100m from the hotel we are staying in.
We stopped by the River Neckar and rested on our walk back to our hotel. A short rest and we were ready to take in the evening game of Canada versus Columbia. The Team Canada coaches expected this to be a close game. The game was played in the tournament stadium and there were lots of people watching as Canada won over Columbia 16-8.
Next to the tournament fields a large summer fair had been set up. Karalee and David accompanied Allen and Sharra to the fair. It looks much like a North American fair, although pretzels and German sausages take the place of hot dogs. Allen and Sharra rode many of the rides as the day slowly darkened and the lights seemed brighter against the night sky.
