August 4, 2010: Bad Wimpfen
Kevin Catching Against The Czech Republic
It was the second day of the World Junior Frisbee Championships. The Canada Men started the day with a win against The Czech Republic. After the game, David and Karalee found a bar near our hotel where we had a lunch sitting outside. Right after lunch we returned to the playing field where the Canada Men defeated the team from Italy.
The games were over by late afternoon. Sharra, Allen, Karalee, and David jumped in our van and drove through the country side to the nearby town of Bad Wimpfen. The prefix "Bad" means "Spa" and was only added to "Wimpfen" in the 1930's.
We found a place to park and then walked along the River Neckar. This is the same river that runs through Heilbronn. It is a feature of the country side in this part of Germany. We walked through the small fortified town until we found the Blue Tower. We entered the tower and started up the steps. Much to our surprise near the top a woman popped her head out of a door facing the stairway. It turns out that she lives in the tower and is also the person that collects money for those, like us, who climb to the top.
The top of the tower had a balcony that ran around all four sides. We went around twice taking pictures of the town, architecture, and the countryside. It was an idyllic scene with small towns interspersed with green fields in most directions. This part of Germany is where a number of manufacturing industries are located and we could see some evidence of industry in the distance.
We climbed back down the tower and then explored the streets of Bad Wimpfen. The streets were cobbled, often leading up and down. Since it was so late in the day most tourists had left and we shared the streets with a few locals out walking their dogs. After a final trip to the town wall, we made our way back to the River Neckar and our car, before driving back to Heilbronn where we had dinner.
