March 21, 2002: Term Two Over In Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca

We arrived in Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands just over a week ago. The Balearic Islands are part of Spain and located off the eastern shore of mainland Spain. We took a few days to cross over from the mainland to Palma, but along the way we had another first on Dragonsinger. Midway on the passage from Ibiza to Mallorca we were further from land than we have ever been in a sailboat.

Since arriving we have had little time for touring. It is the end of the second term of school and students and teachers aboard Dragonsinger have been busy completing a lot of school work. The final mailings are ready to be sent back to Vancouver and we are all ready to take a week off to go exploring and have a rest while we put thoughts of school out of our head.

Our First Visitor

On Monday the first stay-aboard visitor to Dragonsinger arrived from Canada. Bobbie has been a friend of Karalee's for more years than they care to tell. Bobbie lives in Drayton Valley in the province of Alberta. She left three feet of snow and -35C temperatures to be welcomed to Palma by sunny skies, daytime highs over 20C, and not a sign of snow. All of us have been excited to have a visitor and someone new to talk to.

Itinerary

For spring break we are going to spend ten days touring the southern coast of Mallorca, including the Isla de Cabrera. The island is a National Park and we had to apply for permission to stay there for four nights which we have now received. We plan to return to Palma de Mallorca and spend at least a week getting the next term of school work started. We also have a number of small boat projects that we expect to be looked after by the local Jeanneau dealer. Sometime in April we will make the crossing to Corsica, but as that will be our longest passage ever we will be extra careful about picking the right weather conditions.
