February 28, 2002: Enjoying The Sun In Alicante

Approaching Alicante
Approaching Alicante

After making our longest passage ever of 32 hours covering 198 nautical miles from L'Ampolla next to the Ebro river delta, we made it safely to Alicante. We had some special challenages along the way including dodging a dozen fishing boats in the dark as they headed out for the day and missing a huge freighter by only a five or six boat lengths. The weather here is almost tropical, with daily highs around 23C and overnight lows about 15C. The beaches are sandy, but we have too much school work to do to spend any time on them. We plan to be here for another week, but while we enjoy the sun you might want to see what we have been up to in 2002. David is behind in his diary, but you can catch up on all of what we have been up to in the first five weeks of the year by visiting David's diary:

Travel Log

We often ask ourselves just how far we have gone and how much time we have spent traveling. So far our travel has been modest, although we have made some of the longest passages ever as a family. To keep track of how far and how long we are traveling, we have created a trip log of each of our passages. This log is in Microsoft Excel format and documents each journey that we have taken on Dragonsinger. In the last five months we have spent 4.5 days traveling more than one thousand kilometers. As we explore more of the Mediterranean we will post updates to the travel log.

Itinerary

We made it down the Spanish coast as we planned, although we did not visit all of the places that we were thinking of. On the other hand, we got to visit L'Ampolla which wasn't on our plan, but which we really enjoyed. This is the part of cruising that we enjoy with surprises along the way that provide interesting places that you may never have planned on visiting. We plan to stay in Alicante for the next week and then work our way to the Balearic Islands depending on the weather forecasts.
