North Arm of the Fraser River: Deering Island

Deering Island

Vancouver is a city of contrasts. The North Arm of the Fraser River is subject to large tidal influences (tides in Georgia Straight are often 15 feet). Tidal changes require that all docks are floating and that ramps are used to access the docks. As the tide moves up and down, the ramps slide along the docks adjusting to the height of the tide.

Stables

The southlands area of Vancouver provides some interesting contrasts. While part of the region is focused on the North Arm of the Fraser River and boating, there is a huge community that are focused on horses. Despite being within the third-largest city of Canada, the Southlands area acts and looks like a rural community, with horse stables being a normal sight.
