Acueducto de Las Ferreres, Tarragona
Aqueduct
Formal school was out, so we all spent the morning relaxing and taking it easy in the marina in Tarragona. After lunch we decided to do more exploring of Tarragona and visit the Acueducto de Las Ferreres, the local aqueduct. First we had to find the bus that would take us there. We found the right bus line, but the bus was going in the wrong direction. After finding the correct bus, we found that it was a good thing we told the bus driver where we were going. The guidebooks said that we could see the aqueduct from the highway, but when the bus pulled over and the driver told us to get out there was no aqueduct in sight.
After a twenty minute walk along the highway and through a grove of trees, we came upon the aqueduct. We were curious to see it as we had been really impressed with Pont de Gard, a three-level aqueduct that we saw last fall in Provence, France.
Getting Ready To Cross
One thing that was very different from Pont de Gard, was that we were allowed to walk across the top of the aqueduct. Karalee wasn't having anything to do with it, but Jocelyn, Kevin, Allen, and I walked across the narrow aisle that centuries ago used to carry water. Kevin and Allen were so excited that they walked back across and talked Karalee into making the journey.
In the meantime, Jocelyn and I walked back across the valley that we had just crossed. As we made our way next to the aqueduct we were once again amazed that we were able to experience something that had been standing for more than two millennium. When the Romans built things, they built them to last.
